WINDHOEK, Namibia – The 14th Annual Careers Expo was officially launched on 2 April 2025 at a Welcoming Cocktail Event, bringing together key stakeholders from government, private sector, and civil society to support young people in making informed career and life choices.
The Expo, which took place from 3-4 April, is supported by Sanlam Namibia and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) Namibia Country Office. This marks the second consecutive year that UNFPA is supporting the event, reaffirming its commitment to equipping young people with career guidance, mentorship, and essential life skills, including sexual and reproductive health education.
Speaking at the launch, Hon. Sanet Steenkamp, Minister of Education, Innovation, Youth, Sport, Art & Culture, highlighted the importance of career readiness. “The Ministry applauds this initiative for bridging the gap between education and career readiness,” she said.
“The Careers Expo is a beacon of knowledge and inspiration. It illuminates the diverse career pathways available to our learners,” she added.
“It is initiatives like this that reaffirm our collective commitment to equipping the Namibian child with the right information, tools, and guidance. This ensures they can make informed decisions about their futures.”
UNFPA’s commitment to young people’s development
For UNFPA Namibia, career development is closely linked to young people’s health, well-being, and access to the right information. A young person who has access to comprehensive sexual and reproductive health services is more likely to complete their education, pursue meaningful career opportunities, and contribute to a healthier, more productive workforce.
Ms. Erika Goldson, UNFPA Namibia Country Representative, stressed this connection. “Studies show that young people, especially girls, who lack access to education face greater risks,” she said. “Early marriage, poor health outcomes, and economic hardship are just some of the challenges they encounter.”
“There is a direct link between education, economic empowerment, and sexual and reproductive health,” she added. “When young people are equipped with the right knowledge and skills, they have a better chance at a brighter future.”
“Namibia has a youthful population, and this presents a unique opportunity,” Goldson continued. “If young people receive the right support, they can drive the country’s development.” She emphasized that investing in education, health, and well-being is key to harnessing the demographic dividend.
A healthy workforce starts with empowered youth
UNFPA will use this Careers Expo platform to engage young people on issues such as gender equality, youth empowerment, and sexual and reproductive health, emphasizing that a healthy, informed youth population is essential for Namibia’s economic growth.
By continuing its support for the Careers Expo, UNFPA demonstrates its commitment to helping young people make well-informed decisions about their education, health, and careers. The organization remains dedicated to working with partners to expand access to youth-friendly sexual and reproductive health services, promote gender equality, and create opportunities that enable young people to reach their full potential.
