WINDHOEK, Namibia - The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA)'s flagship programme, Safeguard Young People (SYP), supported the 2024 Career Expo, which turned out to be an enriching event for students across the country. Held on 3-4 April at the Windhoek Country Club Resort, the event drew attendees from various high schools, all eager to explore their future careers. Among them was Naanda Petrus (17), a Grade 11 student from Ella Du Plessis High School, who found the experience transformative.
Petrus, like many of her peers, had been navigating the traditional educational advice focused on academic excellence. "At school, the information we receive is more about obtaining good marks to qualify for university," Petrus shared. "We are constantly reminded that good grades are our ticket to higher education. But what about the world beyond the classroom? What skills do employers look for? How do we prepare ourselves for real job markets?"
These questions loomed large until Maria stepped into the bustling environment of the Career Expo. The event was a rich tapestry of booths and stalls representing universities, colleges, and potential employers. For Petrus, it was an eye-opening experience. She had the chance to engage directly with professionals from various industries, gaining first hand insight into what employers seek in potential employees.
Gaining practical insights
I now have a clearer idea of what I want to pursue and how to get there.
"Talking to the employers was amazing," Petrus said with a smile. "I learned that they value not just academic achievements but also skills like communication, problem-solving, and teamwork. It was reassuring to know that they look for well-rounded individuals who can adapt and grow in their roles."
In addition to meeting employers, Petrus visited the stalls of several universities and colleges, where she gathered valuable information about different courses and career paths. "It was enlightening to see the variety of programs available and understand how each can lead to different career opportunities. I now have a clearer idea of what I want to pursue and how to get there," she remarked.
One of the most impactful stops for Maria was the UNFPA stall. Here, she delved into crucial topics that are often overlooked in the traditional school curriculum. "The UNFPA stall was very informative," she stated. "I gained a lot of information about the need to protect my sexual and reproductive health and rights. It’s something we don't talk about enough in school, but it’s so important for our overall well-being."
Guiding tomorrow's leaders
The Career Expo was more than just a chance to explore job opportunities; it was a holistic educational experience that bridged the gap between academic instruction and real-world application. For Petrus and many others, it provided the clarity and confidence needed to make informed decisions about their futures.

“I want to become an engineer, because in my family we have a lot of teachers,” she said.
Highlights of the Careers Expo 2024 included an interactive #Befree Speaker’s Hall, featuring engaging sessions led by various professionals imparting personal career advice and tips. Additionally, UNFPA supported the Seminar Skills Room, where industry experts hosted sessions covering topics such as resume writing, interview skills, entrepreneurship, and professional development.
