WINDHOEK, Namibia - Japanese Ambassador to Namibia, H.E. Hisao Nishimaki, paid a visit to Focus FM in Windhoek today, where he took part in a live interview to discuss Japan's support for Namibia, especially through the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA)’s Leaving No One Behind Project. This visit underscored Japan's dedication to boosting local capabilities and community-led initiatives in Namibia.
Focus FM, along with Kunene Community Radio Station, is a beneficiary of the Leaving No One Behind Project. In November 2023, both stations received training aimed at improving their ability to address gender-based violence (GBV) and provide crucial information on topics such as sexual and reproductive health, mental health, and psychosocial support. Additionally, Focus FM received equipment valued at N$237,030.96 (approximately USD 12,800.00).
The Leaving No One Behind Project aims to support post-COVID-19 recovery in Namibia by addressing the needs of marginalised groups. This initiative focuses on improving livelihoods, preventing and responding to GBV, and expanding access to essential sexual and reproductive health services for those most affected by the pandemic.
The goal is to foster optimism among devastated Namibians.
Before the live interview, H.E. Ambassador Nishimaki emphasised Japan’s commitment to supporting Namibia’s youth and community infrastructure. He noted that Japan has prioritised youth support through projects like classroom construction and capacity-building initiatives. He also highlighted Japan’s support for the UNFPA Leaving No One Behind Project, such as the Shoe Laundry Initiative, designed to empower unemployed youth to generate income for themselves. “The goal is to foster optimism among devastated Namibians,” he said, which aligns perfectly with Focus FM’s slogan, “Optimistic Media”. UNFPA Namibia’s Officer-in-Charge, Loide Amkongo, encouraged Focus FM to continue their efforts to inform, educate and inspire other young people. “I hope through the donation you will continue to inspire other young people and make a difference in their lives," she stated.
