WINDHOEK, Namibia − Japanese Ambassador to Namibia, H.E. Hisao Nishimaki, paid a visit to Focus FM in Windhoek on 18 July 2024, where he took part in a live interview to discuss Japan's support for Namibia, especially through the United Nations Population Fund Leaving No One Behind (LNOB) Project.

Focus FM, along with Kunene Community Radio Station, is a beneficiary of the LNOB Project. In November 2023, both stations received training aimed at improving their ability to address gender-based violence (GBV) and provide crucial information on topics such as sexual and reproductive health, mental health, and psychosocial support. Additionally, Focus FM received equipment valued at N$237,030.96 (approximately USD 12,800.00).

The LNOB Project, funded by the Embassy of Japan in Namibia, aims to support post-COVID-19 recovery efforts by addressing the needs of marginalized groups. This initiative focuses on enhancing livelihoods, preventing and responding to gender-based violence, and expanding access to essential sexual and reproductive health services for those most impacted by the pandemic.

The goal is to foster optimism among devastated Namibians.

Before the live interview, H.E. Ambassador Nishimaki emphasised Japan’s commitment to supporting Namibia’s youth and community infrastructure. He noted that Japan has prioritised youth support through projects like classroom construction and capacity-building initiatives. He also highlighted Japan’s support for the UNFPA Leaving No One Behind Project, such as the Shoe Laundry Initiative, designed to empower unemployed youth to generate income for themselves. “The goal is to foster optimism among devastated Namibians,” he said, which aligns perfectly with Focus FM’s slogan, “Optimistic Media”. UNFPA Namibia’s Officer-in-Charge, Loide Amkongo, encouraged Focus FM to continue their efforts to inform, educate and inspire other young people. “I hope through the donation you will continue to inspire other young people and make a difference in their lives," she stated.

This donation is not merely a gift of equipment, but a profound investment in the future of our radio station.

Focus FM Station Commander Chruschey Snyders recognised the importance of the donation, calling it a turning point for the station. “This donation is not merely a gift of equipment, but a profound investment in the future of our radio station. With this state-of-the-art equipment, our radio station will be better equipped to serve our communities, ensuring that vital news and educational content reach every corner of our nation,” she said.

“Your Excellency, the contributions of Japan to Namibia have been invaluable. From advancements in education and healthcare to infrastructure and community development, your nation‘s dedication has profoundly impacted our country. The Leaving No One Behind Project is yet another shining example of Japan’s commitment to making a tangible difference in the lives of Namibian people,” said Sirka L.T.E. Simon, Focus FM presenter.
